The Sacred Writings of Pseudo-Clementine Literature

The Sacred Writings of Pseudo-Clementine Literature

The name “Pseudo-Clementine Literature” (or, more briefly, “Clementina” ) is applied to a series of writings, closely resembling each other, purporting to emanate from the great Roman Father. But, as Dr. Schaff remarks, in this literature he is evidently confounded with “Flavius Clement, kinsman of the Emperor Domitian.” These writings are two in number: (1) the Recognitions, of which only the Latin translation of Rufinus has been preserved; (2) the Homilies, twenty in number, of which a complete collection has been known since 1853. Other writings may be classed with these; but they are of the same general character, except that most of them show the influence of a later age, adapting the material Read more.../Mehr lesen ...

The Sacred Writings of Eusebius Pamphilus

The Sacred Writings of Eusebius Pamphilus

This edition comprises the following works: ‘The Church History’ or ‘Ecclesiastical History’ – Eusebius and Pamphilus wrote the first surviving history of the Christian Church as a chronologically-ordered account, based on earlier sources complete from the period of the Apostles to their own epoch. This “historical account” has much of Eusebius’s own theological agenda intertwined with the factual text including his view on God, Christ, the Scriptures, the Jews, the church, pagans, and heretics. ‘The Life of Constantine’ (Vita Constantini) is a eulogy or panegyric, and therefore its style and selection of facts are affected by its purpose, rendering it inadequate as a continuation of the Church History. As the historian Socrates Scholasticus said, Read more.../Mehr lesen ...

The Sacred Writings of St. John of Damascus

The Sacred Writings of St. John of Damascus

“Concerning the Orthodox Faith”, the third book of the “Fountain of Wisdom”, is the most important of John Damascene’s writings and one of the most notable works of Christian antiquity. Its authority has always been great among the theologians of the East and West. Here, again, the author modestly disavows any claim of originality – any purpose to essay a new exposition of doctrinal truth. He assigns himself the less pretentious task of collecting in a single work the opinions of the ancient writers scattered through many volumes, and of systematizing and connecting them in a logical whole. It is no small credit to John of Damascus that he was able to Read more.../Mehr lesen ...

The Harmony Of The Gospels

The Harmony Of The Gospels – St. Augustine of Hippo

The most weighty of the doctrinal treatises is that on the Holy Trinity. The Latin original (De Trinitate contra Arianos libri quindecim), is contained in the 8th volume of the Benedictine edition. It is the most elaborate, and probably also the ablest and profoundest patristic discussion of this central doctrine of the Christian religion, unless we except the Orations against the Arians, by Athanasius, “the Father of Orthodoxy,” who devoted his life to the defense of the Divinity of Christ. Augustine, owing to his defective knowledge of Greek, wrote his work independently of the previous treatises of the Eastern Church on that subject. He bestowed more time and care upon Read more.../Mehr lesen ...

The Sacred Writings of St. Ignatius

The Sacred Writings of St. Ignatius

More than one of the earliest ecclesiastical writers have given credence, though apparently without good reason, to the legend that Ignatius was the child whom the Savior took up in His arms, as described in Mark 9:35. It is also believed, and with great probability, that, with his friend Polycarp, he was among the auditors of the Apostle St. John. Among others this volume features The Epistle of Ignatius to the Ephesians, The Epistle of Ignatius to the Magnesians, The Epistle of Ignatius to the Trallians, The Epistle of Ignatius to the Romans ,The Epistle of Ignatius to the Philadelphians, The Epistle of Ignatius to the Smyrnaeans, The Epistle of Ignatius to Polycarp and Read more.../Mehr lesen ...

The Anti-Pelagian Writings

The Anti-Pelagian Writings – St. John Chrysostrom

Both by nature and by grace, Augustin was formed to be the champion of truth in this controversy. Of a naturally philosophical temperament, he saw into the springs of life with a vividness of mental perception to which most men are strangers; and his own experiences in his long life of resistance to, and then of yielding to, the drawings of God’s grace, gave him a clear apprehension of the great evangelic principle that God seeks men, not men God, such as no sophistry could cloud. However much his philosophy or theology might undergo change in other particulars, there was one conviction too deeply imprinted upon his heart ever to fade or alter,—the Read more.../Mehr lesen ...

The Expositions On The Psalms Volume 2

The Expositions On The Psalms Volume 2 – St. Augustine of Hippo

In any commentary on a portion of the Old Testament by a writer unacquainted with Hebrew, exact criticism, and freedom from mistake, must not be expected. But the Psalms have been so in the mouth and in the heart of God’s people in all languages, that it has been necessary often to find an explanation suitable to imperfect translations. And no doubt it is intended that we should use such explanations for the purpose of edification, when we are unable to be more accurate, though in proving doctrine it is necessary always to remember and allow for any want of acquaintance with the original, or uncertainty with respect Read more.../Mehr lesen ...
