The Science Of Political Economy

The Science Of Political Economy – Henry George

Henry George died fighting one of the most corrupt political organizations of the civilized world – a sufficient epitaph for any worthy man. But he has larger claims to respect and consideration. He made a creditable attempt to solve the root-problem of material life – poverty, – and his just-published posthumous book, ” The Science of Political Economy,” excites that pathetic interest which attaches to the memory of one who tried to aid his fellowman. He was eloquent, but he was free from the hysteria of demagogy. His sympathies, born of bitter vicissitude, were acute, but they were tempered with reason. He believed in the equality of opportunity ; but he believed … Read more.../Mehr lesen ...

Political Theories of the Middle Age

Political Theories of the Middle Age – Otto von Gierke

This excellent book is a translation of a very small portion of Dr. Gierke’s ” Deutsches Genossenschaftsrecht, ” being the section entitled ” Die Publizistischen Lehren des Mittelalters. ” Its ten chapters treat of the following questions : The evolution of political theory under the diverse influences of ancient philosophy and law, medieval theology, local custom; Macrocosm and microcosm, i.e., the relation of the whole of society to its parts and vice versa from the medieval viewpoint; unity in Church and State, wherein are discussed the warring positions of parties in both, evolved by the length of the contest between the papacy and the empire; the idea of organization, i.e., … Read more.../Mehr lesen ...

The Condition of Labor

The Condition of Labor – Henry George

This earnest and eloquent Letter to the Pope is by far the most remarkable utterance which the Encyclical of 1890 has evoked. The Pope could not have found a fitter controversialist to oppose him, for Mr. George meets him on the same basis of metaphysical theology, and appeals to the same authority of Scripture and St. Thomas of Aquino. And the whole letter seems, in its manner, curiously to echo the Pope ‘ s own dignified ecclesiastical – Latin style. Mr. George feels that the Encyclical is directed more strongly against his own “single tax” panacea than against what is vaguely called Socialism, which in a moderate form it favors. The Pope expressly … Read more.../Mehr lesen ...

Property in Land

Property in Land – Henry George

A reprint of “The Prophet of San Francisco,” by the Duke of Argyll, from the Nineteenth Century for April, 1884, and of “The Reduction to Iniquity,” by Henry George, from the same magazine for July. The literary reputation and the high social and political rank of the Duke of Argyll have attracted unusual attention to his arraignment of Mr. George’s doctrine as to property in land. Mr. George’s reply is vigorous and aggressive.

Hawaiian Legends Of Old Honolulu

Hawaiian Legends Of Old Honolulu – William Drake Westervelt

The legends of a people are of interest to the scholar, the thinker, and the poet. They tell us of the struggles, the triumphs, and the wanderings of the people, of their thoughts, their aspirations; in short, they give us a twilight history of the race. As the geologist finds in the rocks the dim records of the beginnings of life on our planet, the first foreshadowings of the mighty forests that have since covered the lands, and of the countless forms of animal life that have at last culminated in Man, so does the historian discover in the legends of a people the dim traces of its origin and development … Read more.../Mehr lesen ...

Antonina

Antonina – Wilkie Collins

In ‘Antonina, or The Fall of Rome’, Mr. Collins reproduces in very vivid and gorgeous colors the striking and important events that marked the first steps in the decline of the Roman power. The period affords ample scope to a fertile imagination and a brilliant fancy. We have before us Rome in all its luxury, refinement, and depravity, we watch the spread of the moral gangrene that has eaten into its heart’s core. We would direct the attention of our readers particularly to the description and details of the famine while making its grand strides through the devoted city as one of the most powerful and masterly chapters of the book. The story abounds with passages … Read more.../Mehr lesen ...

Memoirs of the Life of William Collins, Esq., R.A.

Memoirs of the Life of William Collins, Esq., R.A.  – Wilkie Collins

There is much in this book that will interest the English artist. The story of the painter’s life is plainly told – with just enough, scattered here and there, of filial affection and partiality to take it out of the level of ordinary biographies. The journals are rather short, and the correspondence is somewhat scanty, but the matter is generally good, and some of the criticisms will be found both original and suggestive. William Collins, the father of well-known author Wilkie Collins, was born in Great Titchfield Street, London, on the 18th of September 1788. His father was a native of Wicklow – his mother was a Scottish … Read more.../Mehr lesen ...

Charles Dickens – Social Reformer

Charles Dickens – Social Reformer – William Walter Crotch

It seems important to emphasize the fact that Charles Dickens was in a very special sense a social reformer. It was not simply that he loathed shams. With him it was not merely a case of creating characters at which the whole world laughed, humbugs who excited its wrath and impostors who provoked its derision. He was at heart and by conviction a reformer. He looked out upon his age and found corruption in public places and cynicism displayed towards the vital things in national life and character. He found the poor neglected in primary things, such as education, housing, and sanitation, and drilled, dragooned and disciplined out of all reason … Read more.../Mehr lesen ...

Charles Dickens

Charles Dickens – Sidney Dark

“Dickens,” Mr. G. K. Chesterton has written, “is as individual as the sea and as English as Nelson.” The author of this biography has found no better excuse than this for writing another book about him. Dickens was a writer apart and the novelist of the lettered and of the unlettered. The man at the street corner who has hardly heard of Thackeray knows all about Sam Weller and Mrs. Gamp. This is the glory of Dickens In the pages of this book the author has retold, briefly and simply, the events of his life, summarized his ” cheery, gladsome message,” and endeavoured to suggest the particular value and significance of each of his principal Read more.../Mehr lesen ...
