America and the American Church

America and the American Church – Henry Caswall

At a period when the opponents of the Church of England were actively engaged in attempts to undermine her influence and destroy her reputation, it appeared to the author that no work can better exhibit to the British public the vital energy of the Episcopal system, and the real benefits of an adherence to its essential principles, than a circumstantial account of the American Church.

Memoirs of an American Lady

Memoirs of an American Lady – Anne MacVicar Grant

With Sketches of Manners and Scenes in America as they existed previous to the Revolution. Mrs. Grant of Laggan, as she was called, spent several years of her childhood in America, where her father was in the military service, returning to Scotland in 1770, at the age of fifteen. The “ American lady ” who is here described is Mrs. Schuyler of Albany, an aunt of Gen. Schuyler, a lady of great character and intelligence, in whose household the young Scotch girl was for some time on a very intimate footing. The volume shows a remarkable tenacity of memory, as well as a graceful and animated pen. The first forty-three chapters Read more.../Mehr lesen ...

The Nursery Rhyme Book

The Nursery Rhyme Book – Andrew Lang

The babes of former generations were certainly lucky, for they possessed quite the best book of nursery rhymes which has ever been published. “The Nursery Rhyme Book” by Andrew Lang and illustrated by L. Leslie Brooke is a complete collection of the old nursery rhymes which have delighted so many generations, adorned with attractive pictures and accompanied by a preface written in one of Mr. Lang’s most engaging moods. The preface, of course, is not for the little ones, but for the mothers, whose duty it is to read the rhymes- and show the pictures. We do not know [says Mr. Lang] what poets wrote the old nursery rhymes, but certainly some of Read more.../Mehr lesen ...

John Calvin’s Bible Commentaries On The Harmony Of The Gospels Vol. 1

John Calvin’s Bible Commentaries On The Harmony Of The Gospels Vol. 1 – John Calvin

Calvin produced commentaries on most of the books of the Bible. His commentaries cover the larger part of the Old Testament, and all of the new excepting Second and Third John and the Apocalypse. His commentaries and lectures stand in the front rank of Biblical interpretation. Our Author has exerted a powerful influence on all succeeding expositors. They have found their interest in listening to his instructions, and have been more deeply indebted to him than is generally known. Many valuable interpretations of passages of Scripture appeared for the first time in his writings, and have ever since been warmly approved. In other cases, the Read more.../Mehr lesen ...

The Occult Sciences

The Occult Sciences – Arthur Edward Waite

The subject of occultism, by which we mean those sciences, called transcendental and magical, a knowledge of which has been transmitted and accumulated in secret, or is contained in books that have an inner or secret meaning, has been very fully dealt with in this volume. The results of many studies were condensed into this portable volume, which conducts the inquirer into the vestibule of each branch of ” the occult sciences,” and places within his reach the proper means of prosecuting his researches further in any desired direction.

David Copperfield

David Copperfield – Charles Dickens

“Of all my books,” says Charles Dickens in his preface to this immortal novel, “I like this the best. . . . Like many fond parents, I have in my heart of hearts a favorite child. And his name is David Copperfield.” When “David Copperfield’ appeared in 1850, after “Dombey and Son” and before “Bleak House,” it became so popular that its only rival was “Pickwick.” Beneath the fiction lies much of the author’s personal life, yet it is not an autobiography. The story treats of David’s sad experiences as a child, his youth at school, and his struggles for a livelihood, and leaves him in early manhood, prosperous and happily married. Pathos, humor, and Read more.../Mehr lesen ...

Gypsy Sorcery And Fortune Telling

Gypsy Sorcery And Fortune Telling – Charles Godfrey Leland

Mr. Leland has been very industrious in collecting himself the strange lore of “what is really the practical religion of all peasants and poor people, that is, their magical ceremonies and medicine; ” and he also sets forth in an interesting manner very much material derived from authorities little known to the common English reader. Fortune-telling,witch-doctoring, love-philtering, and other kinds of sorcery are very fully described; the volume is, indeed, quite a cyclopedia in its way.

John Calvin’s Bible Commentaries On The Gospel Of John, 12-21

John Calvin’s Bible Commentaries On The Gospel Of John, 12-21 – John Calvin

Calvin produced commentaries on most of the books of the Bible. His commentaries cover the larger part of the Old Testament, and all of the new excepting Second and Third John and the Apocalypse. His commentaries and lectures stand in the front rank of Biblical interpretation. Commentaries On The Gospel Of John are numerous, and some of them are written with great learning and ability. Rarely has a separate and extended interpretation been given to any of the other three Gospels, which are, indeed, so closely interwoven with each other, that it is scarcely possible to expound one of them in a satisfactory manner, without bringing the Read more.../Mehr lesen ...
