The Essential Poems

The Essential Poems – Samuel Taylor Coleridge

Endowed with an intellect of the first order, and an imagination at once delicate and splendid, Coleidge, from a weakness of moral constitution and his lamentable habit, fell far short of the performance which he had planned, and which included various epic poems, and a complete system of philosophy, in which all knowledge was to be co-ordinated. He has, however, left enough poetry of such excellence as to place him in the first rank of English poets. This edition includes his masterpieces, in the first rank his “Rime of the Ancient Mariner.”

Biographia Literaria

Biographia Literaria – Samuel Taylor Coleridge

Coleridge, with his superior philosophical training and profundity of thought, became one of England’s greatest critics, despite his digressiveness and verbosity. The Biographia Literaria (1817), a collection of his literary life and opininions, is both autobiographical and critical. Intended as a mere preface to a collected volume of his poems, explaining and justifying his own style and practice in poetry, the work grew under his hands to a literary autobiography, including, together with many facts concerning his education and studies and his early literary adventures, an extended criticism of Wordsworth’s theory of poetry as given in the preface to the ‘Lyrical Ballads’ and a statement of Coleridge’s philosophical views.

Lyrical Ballads

Lyrical Ballads – Samuel Taylor Coleridge / William Wordsworth

The Ballad as a humble literary type had a certain vogue towards the end of the eighteenth century. It covered the crudest realism as well as the most fantastical romance, and varied in style and treatment as widely as in subject-matter and level of culture. But it hardly held full rank as serious poetry. It was not considered to belong to the literature of culture, but rather to the ruder poetry of the common people. Hence the very title of the new ‘experiment’, Lyrical Ballads, marked somewhat emphatically the limited pretensions of the supposed single author. In this volume Coleridge as well as Wordsworth joined literary forces.

Aids to Reflection

Aids to Reflection – Samuel Taylor Coleridge

In 1825 Coleridge published his Aids to Reflection, a commentary in the form of aphorisms and selected passages from the writings of Archbishop Leighton. The Aids, which may be regarded as an eirenicon between faith and reason, and at one time served as a kind of manual of liberal orthodoxy, brought their compiler applause and recognition, and since his death have been frequently republished. The Aids to Reflection and the posthumous Confessions of an Inquiring Spirit (1840) have been largely instrumental in deepening and widening religious thought within and without the pale of the Churches.

The Book Of Revelation

The Book Of Revelation – James Hastings

Here is a gold mine for the preacher, the teacher and the father and mother in the home who have it in mind to inculcate sound teaching, based upon the Word of God, so that the boys and girls of the congregations, Sunday-Schools and households may be thoroughly rooted and grounded in the essentials of the Christian faith. There are many volumes in this series of short addresses and they cover the entire range of the Holy Scriptures, from Genesis to Revelation. The material gathered here is fresh and varied and there is just enough of it to furnish the groundwork of the preacher’s sermon, the Sunday school teacher’s talk and the parent’s Read more.../Mehr lesen ...

From Existence To Life: The Science Of Self-Consciousness

From Existence To Life: The Science Of Self-Consciousness – James Porter Mills

There has been a growing feeling in my mind that “Health” is too small a title with which to introduce a book that sets forth the noblest science that can possibly be formulated. Although health is one of the most desirable conditions in personal life, and one of the most essential, yet it is but one of the ways of Life that are set forth in the book. It appears to me that, “From Existence to Life; the Science of Self-Consciousness” exactly covers the whole field of that which is herein formulated. It is a science for all-round use, health being but one of the many modes of … Read more.../Mehr lesen ...

A Tour on the Prairies

A Tour on the Prairies – Washington Irving

The productions of Washington Irving are deservedly held in high estimation, not so much, perhaps, for their intrinsic merits as literary compositions, although in this respect they hold no mean position, as for the inimitable tracings of adventurous life which they display through all their gradations and variety, and for the interest they keep alive in the reader, without outraging nature. Several hundred miles beyond the Mississippi extended a vast tract of uninhabited country, where there is neither to be seen the log-house of the white man nor the wigwam of the Indian. It consisted of large grassy plains, interspersed with forests and groves, and watered by the Arkansas, the Grand Canadian, … Read more.../Mehr lesen ...

The Life And Voyages Of Christopher Columbus

The Life And Voyages Of Christopher Columbus – Washington Irving

Irving’s extensive work on Christopher Columbus is one of the most famous biographies in American history. The name of Washington Irving, prefixed to any work, is in itself a sufficient earnest of liberal sentiment and graceful composition. With generous principles and pure intellectual tastes, he unquestionably unites literary talents of no common order. The subject, also, which he has here chosen for the exercise of his powers, is one, if not of any real novelty, at least abounding both in romantic excitement and philosophical interest. It is a subject in many respects, congenial to his own poetical cast of feeling, his imaginative temperament, his amiable and enlightened spirit, and, above … Read more.../Mehr lesen ...

History of the Dhammapda (from wikipedia.com)

According to tradition, the Dhammapada’s verses were spoken by the Buddha on various occasions. “By distilling the complex models, theories, rhetorical style and sheer volume of the Buddha’s teachings into concise, crystalline verses, the Dhammapada makes the Buddhist way of life available to anyone…In fact, it is possible that the very source of the Dhammapada in the third century B.C.E. is traceable to the need of the early Buddhist communities in India to laicize the … Read more.../Mehr lesen ...

The Sacred Writings of Saint Hippolytus

The Sacred Writings of Saint Hippolytus – Saint Hippolytus

This volume contains his most important polemic against heretics, the “Philosophumena”, the original title of which is ‘A Refutation of All Heresies’. The first book had long been known; books IV to X, which had been discovered a short time previously, were published in 1851. But the first chapters of the fourth and the whole of the second and third books are still missing. The first four books treat of the Hellenic philosophers; books V to IX are taken up with the exposition and refutation of Christian heresies, and the last book contains a recapitulation. The work is one of the most important sources for the history of the heresies which … Read more.../Mehr lesen ...
