Esmeralda

Esmeralda – Victor Hugo

Victor Hugo wrote the dramatic libretto for the opera “La Esmeralda” in 1836. Although the premiere of the opera was a failure, the libretto, based on Hugo’s novel ‘The Hunchback of Notre-Dame’, is still worth a read.

Hernani

Hernani – Victor Hugo

The drama ‘Hernani’ tells the story of Doña Sol, the sun of Madrid, who is loved by Don Carlos, king of Spain, by the old duke, Ruy Gomez, and by Hernani, leader of the revolutionists, upon whose head a price is set. Doña Sol loves only Hernani; she receives him secretly at night in the house of her guardian, Ruy Gomez, to whom she is betrothed. She proposes to flee with her lover before the marriage takes place. She declares that she knows not whether he is her demon or her angel, but that she is his slave and will follow him wherever he goes. The Homilies On The Gospel Of St. Matthew Volume 2

The Homilies On The Gospel Of St. Matthew Volume 2 – St. John Chrysostrom

The Homilies of St. Chrysostom on St. Matthew were undoubtedly delivered at Antioch (see Hom. vii. p. 43) and probably in the latter part of the time during which he preached as a Presbyter. Montfaucon consideres his little mention of the sin of swearing a sign of his accomplished some reformation on that point by his previous exertions. In the Homilies delivered from 386 to 388, it is a constant topic; and the Homilies known to belong to that date are so numerous, as scarcely leave room for such a series as the present. These, however, contain very little to mark the period to which they Read more.../Mehr lesen ...

John Calvin’s Commentaries On St. Paul’s Epistle To The Corinthians Volume 2

John Calvin’s Commentaries On St. Paul’s Epistle To The Corinthians Volume 2 – John Calvin

Calvin produced commentaries on most of the books of the Bible. His commentaries cover the larger part of the Old Testament, and all of the new excepting Second and Third John and the Apocalypse. His commentaries and lectures stand in the front rank of Biblical interpretation. THE EPISTLES OF PAUL TO THE CORINTHIANS form a most important part of the Sacred Writings. Though not so systematic as the Epistle to the ROMANS, they contain many passages, bearing directly on the fundamentally important doctrines of the Christian system, while they are of the highest utility in connection with Practical Theology. The disorders that had unhappily crept Read more.../Mehr lesen ...

Irish Impressions

Irish Impressions – Gilbert Keith Chesterton

In this collection of papers the author, in his characteristically discursive fashion, gives his impressions of the Irish character as an almost paradoxical combination of visionary dreamer and practical peasant. He emphasizes the fundamental differences between the English and the Irish out of which arise many if not all the tragic mistakes made on both sides.

A Short History of England

A Short History of England – Gilbert Keith Chesterton

Chesterton, in his unimitable way, remarks that “the only way to write a popular history is to write it backwards.” This is somewhat the method he employs in his book, “A Short History of England,” in which he aims to show the importance of the populace in history, an importance that is wholly neglected by historians. England, he asserts, was created, not so much by the death of the ancient Roman civilization, as “by its escape from death, or by its refusal to die.” For four hundred years Britain was wholly Roman in its civilization. Medizeval civilization arose out of the “resistance to the naked barbarians from the North, and the Read more.../Mehr lesen ...
