The City of Detroit, 1701 -1922, Volume 1 – Clarence Monroe Burton

‘The City of Detroit’ is a milestone work on the history of the Michigan metropolis. Burton’s work covers more than two hundred years of events and facts and had to be split into four volumes due to its size. There is hardly a more detailed book dealing with Detroit’s past. This is volume one, covering the early years and the political and civic history.

America and the American Church

America and the American Church – Henry Caswall

At a period when the opponents of the Church of England were actively engaged in attempts to undermine her influence and destroy her reputation, it appeared to the author that no work can better exhibit to the British public the vital energy of the Episcopal system, and the real benefits of an adherence to its essential principles, than a circumstantial account of the American Church.

Memoirs of an American Lady

Memoirs of an American Lady – Anne MacVicar Grant

With Sketches of Manners and Scenes in America as they existed previous to the Revolution. Mrs. Grant of Laggan, as she was called, spent several years of her childhood in America, where her father was in the military service, returning to Scotland in 1770, at the age of fifteen. The “ American lady ” who is here described is Mrs. Schuyler of Albany, an aunt of Gen. Schuyler, a lady of great character and intelligence, in whose household the young Scotch girl was for some time on a very intimate footing. The volume shows a remarkable tenacity of memory, as well as a graceful and animated pen. The first forty-three chapters Read more.../Mehr lesen ...

Compendium of history and biography of the city of Detroit and Wayne County, Michigan

Compendium of history and biography of the city of Detroit and Wayne County, Michigan – Clarence Monroe Burton

All history is, perforce, a merciless abridgment, and yet too much can never be written concerning any nation, any people— since each contribution must have a definite value. In the offering of this compendium of history and biography, the publishers lay claim not to any amplification of data in the annals of Detroit and Wayne county, but rather to the condensed, narrative presentation of the history of a section whose records bear the graceful tales of romance and the sterner burdens of definite accomplishment.

History of Seattle Volume 2

History of Seattle Volume 2 – Clarence B. Bagley

The preparation of a “History of Seattle” has been the exploration of a new field and the amount of patient research and careful investigation involved has been a task of colossal proportions. The printed and written records of the first twenty years of Seattle’s existence are scanty almost beyond belief. Not until 1863 was a newspaper established there and, for many years, more space in it was devoted to eastern and foreign politics than to the record of local passing events. Few, if any, pioneers kept diaries and none of these, except that of the writer, has been accessible. And yet has this work become one of the most detailed and Read more.../Mehr lesen ...
