Malleus Maleficarum – The Witch Hammer

Malleus Maleficarum – The Witch Hammer – Sprenger/Kramer

Jacob Sprenger, German theologian of the 15th century, and Heinrich Kramer are the authors of the ‘Malleus Maleficarum’ or ‘Witch Hammer’ (1489), which first formulated in detail the doctrine of witchcraft, and formed a textbook of procedure for witch trials. They were appointed inquisitors under the bull ‘Summis desiderantes affectibus’ of Innocent VIII in 1484, and their work is arranged in three parts — ‘Things that pertain to Witchcraft’; ‘The Effects of Witchcraft’; and ‘The Remedies for Witchcraft.’ It discusses the question of the nature of demons; the causes why they seduce men, and particularly women; transformations into beasts, as wolves and cats; and the various charms and exorcisms to be employed Read more.../Mehr lesen ...

The Yoga Sutras Of Patanjali

The Yoga Sutras Of Patanjali – Charles Johnston

The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali are in themselves exceedingly brief, yet they contain the essence of practical wisdom, set forth in admirable order and detail. The theme, if the present interpreter be right, is the great regeneration, the birth of the spiritual from the psychical man: the same theme which Paul so wisely and eloquently set forth in writing to his disciples in Corinth, the theme of all mystics in all lands. We think of ourselves as living a purely physical life, in these material bodies of ours. In reality, we have gone far indeed from pure physical life; for ages, our life has been psychical, we have been centred and immersed Read more.../Mehr lesen ...

The Lotus Sutra (Saddharma-Pundarika)

The Lotus Sutra (Saddharma-Pundarika) – Johan Hendrik Caspar Kern

The Lotus Sutra is considered the greatest of all Buddhist scriptures. It interprets the person of Buddha as a manifestation of metaphysical entity and synthesizes the two aspect of his being: his incarnation in human life and his real ontological identity. It teaches salvation for all creatures, reducing the Three Vehicles to One Vehicle, on the principle of “One is all and All is One.” We know nothing of its authorship or its place of origin, but its first translation into Chinese is dated c. 255 A-D.

The Political Aspects of St. Augustine’s City of God

The Political Aspects of St. Augustine’s City of God – John Neville Figgis

When one civilization has fallen and another is in its birth throes, people are apt to be seduced by the rushlights of a false leadership. The mind and mood of such a time of transition are intensely puzzling and those who would meet its needs must have insight and vision. The Epistle to the Hebrews was written after the fall of Jerusalem in the interest of a larger faith and in defense of the substantial authority of Christianity. When Rome was sacked by Alaric in 410 A. D., the shock of the catastrophe reacted against Christianity. Augustine wrote the De Civitate Dei to prove that the disaster Read more.../Mehr lesen ...

Corpus Hermeticum

Corpus Hermeticum – G.R.S. Mead

The so-called Hermetic writings have been known to Christian writers for many centuries. The early church Fathers (Justin Martyr, Tertullian, Clement of Alexandria) quote them in defense of Christianity. Stobaeus collected fragments of them. The Humanists knew and valued them. They were studied in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and in modern times have again been diligently examined by many scholars.

The Jefferson Bible – Life And Morals Of Jesus Of Nazareth

The Jefferson Bible – Life And Morals Of Jesus Of Nazareth – Thomas Jefferson

The book is Jefferson’s notions as to the life and doctrines of Jesus, and it is significant that he ends the Life with the laying of Jesus in the sepulchre. The resurrection formed no part of Jefferson’s belief. The doctrines selected by Jefferson as commending themselves to him are the precepts which the Christians sedulously avoid quoting. As a whole, he considered the doctrines of Jesus defective, and to have been made worse by the Christians, and so made a wee little book of the doctrines he deemed the best.

The Symbolism of Freemasonry

The Symbolism of Freemasonry – Albert G. Mackey

Of the various modes of communicating instruction to the uninformed, the masonic student is particularly interested in two; namely, the instruction by legends and that by symbols. It is to these two, almost exclusively, that he is indebted for all that he knows, and for all that he can know, of the philosophic system which is taught in the institution. All its mysteries and its dogmas, which constitute its philosophy, are intrusted for communication to the neophyte, sometimes to one, sometimes to the other of these two methods of instruction, and sometimes to both of them combined. The Freemason has no way of reaching any of the esoteric teachings of the Order Read more.../Mehr lesen ...
