The Soliloquies – St. Augustine of Hippo

The Soliloquies were written by St. Augustine in the 4th-century. The two books contain an “inner dialogue” with questions, answers and thorough discussions, that finally aim to gain self-knowledge. While in the first book the dialogue longs to know a soul, it becomes evident in the second book that it is the author himself who wants to get to know his own.

The importance of the letters of eminent men, as illustrations of their life, character, and times, is too well understood to need remark. This is especially true of the Letters of Augustin. A large number of them are ecclesiastical and theological, and would in our day have appeared as pamphlets, or would have been delivered as lectures. There are none of his writings which do not receive some supplementary light from his letters. The subjects of his more elaborate writings are here handled in an easier manner, and their sources, motives, and origin are disclosed.

The City of God – St. Augustine of Hippo

De Civitate Dei, in English known as The City of God, is a classic of Christian philosophy written by Augustine of Hippo in the early 5th century AD. It is one of his major works, him being considered the most influential Father of the Church in Western Christianity. The The City of God profoundly shaped Western civilization.
