Economics, Volume 1: Economic Principles

Economics, Volume 1: Economic Principles – Frank A. Fetter

Professor Fetter’s ‘Economic Principles’ is the first half of a two-volume treatise on economics. The second half ‘Modem Economic Problems’ deals with the applications of principles. In general Professor Fetter’s theory may be described as mechanistic and Austrian. To call it mechanistic signifies that, like the usual type of economic theory, it treats the industrial and business system as being somewhat analogous to a mechanism, in that the operations of this system are explained in terms of practically contemporaneous causes and effects without reference to the changes in its structure which take place with the passage of time. Here ” mechanistic ” is substituted for the less appropriate “deductive” as a … Read more.../Mehr lesen ...

In this volume are reprinted for convenient reference more than ninety documents which are “intended to serve either as a basis for the study of the constitutional history of an important period, or as a companion to the political history of the time.” With the exception of four, mentioned in the preface, they are taken from books that are beyond the reach of most students unless they have access to large and well-equipped libraries The whole is prefaced by a concise account of the period, so that we have at hand what might be compared to the finder on a telescope. Law in a free state

Law in a free state – Wordsworth Donisthorpe

Addressed to the large body of English men who, while inclined to individualism,” inconsistently appeal to socialism for the attainment of certain ends which at first sight seem to be unattainable under a regime of freedom.” Questions of libel, of cruelty to animals, of copyright, of adulteration, of the relation of the sexes, of rights over land, of nuisance and many others. Mr. Donisthorpe considers difficult to solve straight off on the principle of equal liberty. Still that they may be so solved he shows in nine chapters which discuss many social questions from both the Individualists and Socialists standpoint.

Individualism, a system of politics

Individualism, a system of politics – Wordsworth Donisthorpe

Mr. Donisthorpe gives one the impression of a man thoroughly familiar with his own ground, and whose conclusions have not been formed at hap-hazard or without deep and earnest reflection. The main idea of the book is that individualism properly understood furnishes the key to a true political system. The last thing Mr. Donisthorpe would wish to do would be to relax the bonds of society. His aim, on the contrary, is to strengthen and perfect society, in the first place, by a scientific separation of the domain of the state and that of private activity; and, secondly, by carrying to its fullest legitimate development the principle of individual liberty. Mr. Donisthorpe … Read more.../Mehr lesen ...

Lectures on the Relation between Law and Public Opinion during the 19th Century

Lectures on the Relation between Law and Public Opinion during the 19th Century – Albert Venn Dicey

A course of lectures delivered at the Harvard Law School in 1898 form the basis of the book; but these have been modified and altered in subsequent presentation at Oxford University. Three opening lectures discuss the relation between law and public opinion, the characteristics of law-making opinion in England, and the influence of democracy on legislation. These prepare the way for the central theme, an analysis of the leading tendencies of English legislation during the past century. Three periods are marked off, in each of which the main current of legislation is clearly shown to be in accordance with certain definite principles: first, … Read more.../Mehr lesen ...

American Slavery As It Was – The Background Of Twelve Years A Slave

American Slavery As It Was – The Background Of Twelve Years A Slave – Theodore Dwight Weld

With the recent success of the movie and book “Twelve Years A Slave” in mind, this title, as the name imports, gives a true picture of the state of slavery in the United States in the first half of the 19th century. It had an important bearing on the great controversy upon this subject at the time it was published. The evidence which it contains is minutely circumstantial. A considerable portion of the book consists of the narratives of persons who have resided at the south, and witnessed the treatment of the slaves on the plantation with which they were conversant. With very … Read more.../Mehr lesen ...

Essential Writings Volume 4

Essential Writings Volume 4 – William Cobbett

William Cobbett was an English journalist and member of parliament, who was born in Farnham, Surrey. He believed that reforming Parliament and abolishing the rotten boroughs would help to end the poverty of farm labourers, and he attacked the borough-mongers, sinecurists and “tax-eaters” relentlessly. Through the seeming contradictions in Cobbett’s life, his opposition to authority stayed constant. He wrote many polemics, on subjects from political reform to religion. This is volume four out of four of his most essential writings, covering works for the weekly newspaper “Political Register” from the years 1811 to 1816.
