History of Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1630-1877, Volume 2

History of Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1630-1877, Volume 2 – Lucius R. Paige

The “History of Cambridge” was originally published in 1877. Besides the historical narrative in this volume, the second volume contains a very full and carefully compiled “Genealogical Register” of the early settlers and their descendants. These volumes are, in the most essential respects, models of what a town history should be. They contain the most important information obtainable from the sources then open to the author, and this is presented in a clear and concise narrative. In the estimation of those most competent to pass judgment, these volumes are authorities. But they are something more than authorities. They not only instruct; they inspire. Nobody deserves the privilege of growing Read more.../Mehr lesen ...

On the Christian Life

On the Christian Life – John Calvin

This book treats of the Life of the Christian. Its five chapters are arranged as to admit of being classed under two principal heads. First, it must be held to be an universally acknowledged point, that no man is a Christian who does not feel some special love for righteousness, chap. i. Second, in regard to the standard by which every man ought to regulate his life, although it seems to be considered in chap. ii. only, yet the three following chapters also refer to it. For it shows that the Christian has two duties to perform. First, the observance being so arduous, he needs the greatest patience. Hence chap. iii. treats professedly Read more.../Mehr lesen ...

On Christian Doctrine

On Christian Doctrine – St. Augustine of Hippo

The four books of St. Augustin On Christian Doctrine (De Doctrina Christiana, iv libri) are a compend of exegetical theology to guide the reader in the understanding and interpretation of the Sacred Scriptures, according to the analogy of faith. The first three books were written ad 397; the fourth was added 426. It is the first and best patristic work on biblical Hermeneutics, and continued for a thousand years, together with the Prefaces of Jerome, to be the chief exegetical guide. Although it is superseded as a scientific work by modern Hermeneutics and Critical Introductions to the Old and New Testaments, it is not surpassed for originality, depth and spiritual insight.

The Mayor Of Casterbridge

The Mayor Of Casterbridge – Thomas Hardy

In the setting of this story we recognize much of our author’s old power. The quiet rural town is set as distinctly before us as Cranford is. But the people to whom Mr. Hardy introduces us upon its streets are not the people Mrs. Gaskell makes us know and love. There is to our mind not a really attractive character in the whole book. The good ones have a tendency to become commonplace, the bad ones can hardly be said to be interesting. It is true that Michael Henchard, the self-made hero, is a remarkable character study from the point of view of a psychologist or a sociologist, but that does not make Read more.../Mehr lesen ...

The Master Mind

The Master Mind – Theron Q. Dumont

In this book there will be nothing said concerning metaphysical theories or philosophical hypotheses; instead, there will be a very strict adherence to the principles of psychology. There will be nothing said of ”spirit” or “soul”; but very much said of “mind.” There will be no speculation concerning the question of “what is the soul,” or concerning “what becomes of the soul after the death of the body.” These subjects, while highly important and interesting, belong to a different class of investigation, and are outside of the limits of the present inquiry. We shall not even enter into a discussion of the subject of “what is the mind”; instead, we shall confine our Read more.../Mehr lesen ...

Ruy Blas

Ruy Blas – Victor Hugo

Ruy Blas has held the stage better than any other of his dramas and has been popular in America. Here Hugo’s dramatic theory of contrast of grave and gay, rapid alternation of tragic and grotesque, is pushed to its utmost verge. The scene is Madrid; the time 1699. Don Salluste de Bazan, scorned by Maria de Neubourg, second wife of the do-nothing King, Charles II, plots revenge. Failing to enlist the aid of his scapegrace but chivalrous cousin, Don César, he introduces his valet, Ruy Blas, to the queen and through her sympathetic interest gains official preferment which he uses for political and fiscal reform. The queen and Ruy Blas are betrayed into a compromising Read more.../Mehr lesen ...
