Is Shakespeare Dead?

Is Shakespeare Dead? – Mark Twain

“Is Shakespeare Dead?” is a scholarly work of profound erudition, and has been accepted by critics as the final word on the Baconian controversy. No Shakespearite after reading it can longer cling to the Stratford fallacy. The author reasons logically that the writer of the plays could not have been Shakespeare, because they exhibit an intimate knowledge of the technicalities of the law, and there is no evidence that Shakespeare, the actor, had at any time the leisure to acquire legal lore.

Christian Science

Christian Science – Mark Twain

Mark Twain wrote this book about Christian Science in 1907, three years before his death. Although he was most interested in spirituality and the basics of mental healing, he was a fierce enemy of Mrs. Baker Eddy, the founder of the Christian Science movement. The essays in this book highlight what Twain really thought about this religious movement.

A Double Barrelled Detective Story

A Double Barrelled Detective Story – Mark Twain

“A Double-Barrelled Detective Story” is just one of Mark Twain’s little airy nothings that come our way every now and then and afford us an hour of genuine amusement and then fit away to smile their cheerful smiles upon some other beings equally forlorn. The plot of the tale is an ingeniously contrived one, the characters are cleverly depicted, although they present a type more imaginative than real and the mode of expression is just the same clear-cut, vigorous, resounding style that we might expect from so skilful a writer. The whole is a satire, wonderfully diverting and highly amusing with just a sufficient quantity of veiled truth to give it an … Read more.../Mehr lesen ...

The Man that corrupted Hadleyburg (and other stories and essays)

The Man that corrupted Hadleyburg (and other stories and essays) – Mark Twain

‘The Man that Corrupted Hadleyburg’ gives its title to this collection of short stories by Mark Twain. We find here the old Mark, with a difference. The years that bring the philosophic mind have made of the inimitable humorist a writer of stories with a purpose. But the author’s purpose is not permitted to thwart the reader’s, which is to get at least one good laugh out of everything that Mark Twain signs. As the present tales and sketches reprinted from Harper’s, The Century, The Cosmopolitan, etc., contain more than one laugh each, the reader should not be disappointed who finds them provocative of thought as well … Read more.../Mehr lesen ...

Following the Equator (A Journey around the World)

Following the Equator (A Journey around the World) – Mark Twain

A happy and interesting jumble is this book of Mark Twain’s. It is like a lucky-bag at a fair. In his zigzag journey around the world, the humorist has made a collection of odds and ends of fun, philosophy, and fantastic description, such as has never been gathered in the pages of a single book, and any one dipping in at random is sure of a prize. The heterogeneous mass has some pretense of being loosely strung together, but it is on a line as long as the Equator itself. It is a traveler’s miscellany — a globe-trotter’s hotch-potch — a sociologist’s cabinet of specimens, all bearing the quaint … Read more.../Mehr lesen ...

Tom Sawyer, Detective

Tom Sawyer, Detective – Mark Twain

In this book we meet once again Huck Finn, Tom Sawyer, and the faithful Jim, and their adventures are just as interesting as ever and have all that freshness and quaint humor that gave the volume in which they first appeared a charm such as few boys’ books possess. The tale is told by Huck Finn, Tom Sawyer’s faithful henchman, and it is an exciting narrative of these two boys’ adventures with thieves on a Mississippi steamboat, a mysterious murder, a trial, and a final unravelling of the mystery by Tom.

Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc

Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc – Mark Twain

A lengthy historical novel written because Joan of Arc was Clemens’ favorite historical character. He stated: “It means more to me than anything I have ever undertaken.” Clemens devoted twelve years to researching and writing this novel. Harper’s Magazine serialized it first in three monthly installments (April 1895-April 1896) without his name. He used the pseudonym Sieur Louis de Conte to prevent the work’s not being taken seriously under his own name, while the name of the translator, Jean Francois Alden, is referred to as a pun on John Alden. This edition contains many of the fine drawings that had appeared in the periodical. (From “A Centennial For Tom Sawyer”)

The Tragedy of Pudd`nhead Wilson

The Tragedy of Pudd`nhead Wilson – Mark Twain

Mark Twain’s book is a story of mixed babies and the ingenious detection of crime. It is not altogether another ” Hucklebury Finn.” On the other hand, it is a relief to find that it is not another ” Yankee at King Arthur’s Court.” Roxy, the slave woman who changes the babies, is a delightful character who stirs us with a warm and ready interest. For the rest, there is little said to rouse enthusiasm. Puddn’head Wilson himself is unreal, too much of the deus ex machina, though there is much that is Twainian in the specimen sayings that illustrate his wisdom. Every chapter is headed with these extracts, and it is … Read more.../Mehr lesen ...
